    1885年5月22日雨果逝世，法国为这位长眠的巨人举行了国葬。以下为雨果的遗言：
    我留下五万法郎给穷人。
    我要求用穷人的柩车把我运到墓地。
    我拒绝任何教堂为我祷告；我请求为普天下的灵魂祈祷。
    我相信上帝。
